Ask a Chapel Hill or Carrboro regular where to eat this month and you'll get two different answers depending on which side of town they're standing on. Eastgate Crossing's recovery is one part of the story: Aldi reopened in April, more than nine months after floodwater filled the store. New restaurants and shops have also been opening on Franklin Street, at East 54, and in Carr Mill Mall.
That's the part worth sitting with. Eastgate Crossing's recovery has unfolded storefront by storefront, while new businesses have also opened elsewhere in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
The Long Year at Eastgate
Tropical Storm Chantal hit on July 6, 2025, and the numbers still don't sound real a year later. Chantal brought 6-9 inches of rain to Chapel Hill, and floodwater rose several feet inside stores at Eastgate Crossing, damaging inventory, equipment and infrastructure. Some businesses got it worse than others. The Loop's marketing chief told The Daily Tar Heel:
"We received almost 6 feet of water in about a 45-minute span, and so it was catastrophic damage that really totaled everything in the store."
The reason this kept happening comes down to geography and timing. Eastgate Crossing was built in 1958 on top of Booker Creek, and it predates the town's flood damage prevention ordinance that now prevents new development on floodplains. Countywide, Chantal caused more than $56 million in damage across Orange County, with much of that concentrated at Eastgate Crossing.
What followed was a slow, staggered comeback that anyone doing weekly grocery runs in that part of town has been living through:
| Business | Reopened | Time Closed |
|---|---|---|
| Great Outdoor Provision Co. | October 2025 | About 3 months |
| Trader Joe's | October 2025 | About 3 months |
| The Loop | Late January 2026 | 6 months |
| Snooze | March 1, 2026 | Nearly 8 months |
| Aldi | April 16, 2026 | 9 months |
By October 2025, several Eastgate businesses had reopened, including Great Outdoor Provision, Trader Joe's, Rose Nails, Winestore, Olmaz Jewelers, Guglhupf, and Chipotle. The Loop reopened in late January 2026, after closing in July 2025 due to flood damage from Tropical Storm Chantal. Snooze reopened on March 1, 2026, after being closed for nearly eight months. Aldi didn't reopen until April 16, 2026, after nine months of repairs.
Not everyone made it back. Several storefronts remain dark for good, including Starbucks, Bruegger's Bagels, Jersey Mike's, Rise Biscuits, and Talbots. As of this spring, there was still no timeline for Ulta to reopen, and Talbots and Birkenstock had closed permanently. Olmaz Jewelers made it back in October, but the owner told Axios the whole ordeal will "haunt" him for a while. That word captures the lasting impact of the flooding on a local business.
New Businesses Across Chapel Hill and Carrboro
As Eastgate businesses worked through repairs, new investments were also taking shape across town.
Géos Tavern & Oyster Bar opened its doors on June 8 at East 54, a 220-seat restaurant from Giorgios Hospitality Group combining a neighborhood tavern feel with North Carolina seafood. That's a serious seat count for a brand-new build. Down on Franklin Street, Próximo opened as a Spanish tapas and wine bar at 173 E. Franklin Street, serving modern Spanish dishes nightly for dinner.
Carrboro's Main Street has been just as busy. Longleaf Swine, a Raleigh-based barbecue restaurant, is opening a new location in Carrboro at 307 E. Main Street, taking over the space left by Luna Rotisserie and Taproom. Luna closed to customers on March 8, 2026, after six years at that address. A few doors down, Bru's Public House, a sports bar expanding from Wade Park Boulevard in Raleigh, opened its Carrboro location at 370 E. Main Street on a Saturday this spring. And last November, Golden Fig Books, a Durham-based bookstore, celebrated the grand opening of its second location in Carr Mill Mall on November 18.
Even the bakeries are betting on this corridor. Even Dough Bakery, a Chapel Hill home bakery, recently purchased 203 West Weaver Street in Carrboro, the former space of Mosaic Tapas Bistro & Wine Bar, to expand. A bakery buying real estate is a different kind of commitment than a restaurant reopening a leased space. It's a bet on the block, not just the storefront.
Carrburritos' Move to Carr Mill Mall
Carrburritos is moving to Carr Mill Mall this summer, after 29 years in its current space on Rosemary Street.
Carrburritos wasn't touched by Chantal. The restaurant is relocating into the same mall complex where Golden Fig Books just opened.
What's Actually on the Calendar Right Now
None of this is theoretical if you're trying to figure out what to do this week. Southern Village's free concert series, Sunday Night Live, runs Sunday evenings from May 3 through September 20, 2026, from 7 to 9 p.m., with no cover charge though musicians appreciate a tip. That leaves a handful of Sundays before the season wraps.
Wednesdays have their own rhythm. Wind Down Wednesday runs from April 1 through October 21, 2026, at 6 p.m. at La Vita Dolce in Southern Village, a kid-friendly, dog-friendly event with live music and wine specials every week. That one has legs well into fall.
Carrboro Farmers' Market marked its own moment on the calendar just last week, celebrating National Farmers' Market Week with a mini museum of its own history set up in the gazebo. The market runs every Saturday, tomatoes or not.
The 2nd Friday Art Walk brings galleries, artist studios, shops, live music, and spoken word to downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill in September. It's the kind of night where you end up in three different new storefronts without meaning to, which, given everything above, is sort of the point.
School buses start rolling again on August 24, when Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools opens for the year, so if you've been putting off a weeknight dinner out before the calendar gets crowded, this is the stretch to do it.
The Actual Takeaway
Eastgate Crossing's recovery is one part of the local business story. New restaurants and shops have also opened or are planned for Franklin Street, East 54, and Carrboro's Main Street corridor. A 220-seat restaurant, a bakery buying its own building, and Carrburritos' planned move are among the changes in the local business mix. If you're deciding where to spend a Friday night, Chapel Hill and Carrboro offer several areas with restaurants and shops to explore.
If you're a longtime resident who's been eyeing what a move might look like now that the map of this town has shifted, or you're just curious what your home might be worth in a market that's paying attention to corridors like these, Alli Pepperling knows this ground block by block.
